چکیده

This paper presents a micro-payment-based incentive mechanism for long-term peer-to-peer storage systems. The main novelty of the proposed incentive mechanism is to allow users to be off-line for extended periods of time without updating or renewing their information by themselves. This feature is enabled through a digital cheque, issued by the user, which is later employed by the peers to get a gratification for storing the user’s information when the user is off-line. The proposed P2P backup system also includes a secure and lightweight data verification mechanism. Moreover, the proposed incentive also contributes to improve the availability of the stored information and the scalability of the whole system. The paper details the verification and cheque-based incentive mechanisms in the context of a P2P backup service and analyzes its scalability and security properties. The system is furthermore validated by means of simulation, proving the effectiveness of the proposed incentive. 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Replica placement for p2p redundant data storage on unreliable, non-dedicated machines

P2P architecture appears to fit for enterprise backup. In contrast to dedicated backup servers, nowadays a standard solution, making backups directly on organization’s workstations should be cheaper (as existing hardware is used) and more efficient (as there is no single bottleneck server). However, non-dedicated machines cause other challenges. Update propagation algorithms must take into acco...

Market Design for a P2P Backup System

Peer-to-peer (P2P) backup systems are an attractive alternative to server-based systems because the immense costs of large data centers can be saved by using idle resources on millions of private computers instead. This paper presents the design and theoretical analysis of a market for a P2P backup system. While our long-term goal is an open resource exchange market using real money, here we co...

A Collective Approach to Harness Idle Resources of End Nodes

We propose a collective approach for harnessing the idle resources (cpu, storage, and bandwidth) of nodes (e.g., home desktops) distributed across the Internet. Instead of a purely peer-to-peer (P2P) approach, we organize participating nodes to act collectively using collective managers (CMs). Participating nodes provide idle resources to CMs, which unify these resources to run meaningful distr...

User-experience-based availability analysis model and its application in P2P storage systems

Data availability is one of the most important properties of peer-to-peer (P2P) storage systems. Availability analysis model and data placement are two key design choices. Users in P2P storage system are both providers and customers. This characteristic determines that the availability analysis must be user-centric, and thereby enhance the quality of service and decrease the system cost. The po...

Price Differentiation All-Pay Auction-Based Incentives in BitTorrent

Free riding, the behavior of attempting to benefit resources contributed by others while sharing their own values as minimum as possible, is one of the key problems in many P2P systems. Incentive mechanisms are proposed to solve the problem. In this paper, we introduce an all-pay auction model to study the resource distribution process in BitTorrent-like P2P system. Based on this model, the adv...
